Design Philosophy

Our design approach for the Recycling Village places central importance on creating a green, landscaped environment, which will fit naturally into the surrounding area and be a pleasant site to work in.   Drawing on the concept of a ‘science park’, we propose to use a range of high quality features and building materials to ensure that the neighboring scenery is fully respected, rather than simply creating a generic collection of industrial units.

The waste-to-renewable biomass buildings will be designed as exemplar ‘object’ buildings, finished with high performance materials to enhance their life-cycle.  All aspects of the building design – material sourcing, construction and operation – will be carefully considered in order to minimise the site’s overall carbon footprint.

A range of approaches will be adopted to achieve this, including:

  • Using recycled and sustainable materials for every aspect of the buildings’ structure, cladding and finishes.  Indeed, many building materials (such as glu-lam timber beams and high-performance compressed paper cladding panels) could be produced from the on-site recycling processes.
  • Re-using excavated rock from the site to create retaining walls and landscape features.
  • Utilising green roofs with a variety of flora, to contribute to the overall appearance of the development and also assist with drainage requirements.
  • Installing rainwater harvesting systems to capture and re-use rainwater for other functions on-site.
